The School Community Advisory Panel will
be delivering its Interim Report to the Director of the
Toronto District School Board, Gerry Connelly, on August 28,
2007 rather than the planned date of August 22, 2007.
The extension was necessary to allow the Panel to
gather additional data and to conduct key consultations that,
due to summer holiday logistics, have yet to be
completed.

from a wide array of individuals, including three
representatives from community based organizations, the Chief
Commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission, and NDP
Candidate for York West, seven parents, a guidance counsellor,
a school settlement worker, a friend of Jordan Manners'
mother, and a lawyer who works extensively in the
community.

correspondence dated June 27, 2007 Julian Falconer, Chair of
the School Community Safety Advisory Panel wrote
Gerry Connelly, Director of the Toronto District School Board
seeking an extension in respect of the report deadline. By
correspondence dated July 11, 2007 the Director's office has
confirmed the proposed extensions. Accordingly, the interim
report of the Panel will be presented to the Director on
August 22, 2007. The final report of the Panel is to be
presented to the Director on September 30, 2007.

conduct confidential interviews with
students.
June 14, 2007 The Panel
attended student assemblies at C. W. Jefferys C.I. and a
parent council meeting. Consultations commenced with those
students willing to speak to the Panel on a confidential
basis.
June 12, 2007 The Panel
members underwent specialized training for the purposes of
approaching youth and children on issues on safety and
security. To this effect, Panel commenced training session
with a specialist in child
trauma/psychology.
June 11, 2007 The Toronto
District School Board appointed a Panel to inquire into issues
of safety at C.W. Jefferys Collegiate Institute following the
tragic death of Jordan Manners. The School Community Safety
Advisory Panel is to report on ways to make schools safer
places for our children.
June 8, 2007
School Safety Panel presented the operating
budget it anticipates will be necessary for its work. A
meeting was convened with the executive of the parents school
council. This has been followed by two more meetings where the
Panel addressed all students personally and in which parents
had been invited by written notice.
June 7,
2007 Remaining members of the Panel were confirmed
and the Panel convened its first meeting of members and
identified a number of action items that required immediate
attention. Initial contact with the leadership at C.W.
Jefferys took place including Ms. Newton-Thompson, Principal,
Ms. Mitchell, Chair of the School Council and Ms. Lister,
Superintendent.

Public announcement of the convening of the
School Community Safety Advisory Panel (The "School Safety
Panel"). Julian Falconer, Chair of the Panel advised that
within one week, a brief report on the School Safety Panel's
progress on commencing implementation of its mandate as set
out in its Terms of
Reference.
